ALS Town Hall: Exercise and ALS

Guest Presenters: Dr. Jonathan Cooper-Knock, Laura Good, and Amanda Beaty

Wednesday, July 28, 2021 | 4:00 – 5:30pm EDT

In our upcoming Town Hall: Exercise and ALS, we will learn about and discuss two important aspects of the role of physical exercise in ALS, including:

  • Recent findings that intense physical exercise may be a risk factor for certain kinds of familial ALS
  • And, the potential benefits of exercise for people living with the disease.

We will be joined by Dr. Jonathan Cooper Knock,of the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN), who co-authored a recently published paper which focuses the possible detrimental effect of frequent strenuous exercise on those with the C9orf72 dipeptide repeat mutation.

We will also discuss how many people with ALS have used exercise programs to maintain strength and manage symptoms following their diagnosis. Joining us to lead this discussion will be physical therapists Laura Good and Amanda Beaty, of the Duke ALS Clinic.
